Last month on March 19, 2025, a basketball game between the Pelicans and the Timberwolves occurred. In this match, the Pelicans star player, Zion Williamson, gets injured due to a hard fall that had given him a lower back bone contusion. Although he was able to stay in the game during this time, leading his team to a victory of 119-115, he later on had some serious problems involving his injury.
Williamson missed quite a few basketball games due to this injury. About a week later, on March 31, 2025, the Pelicans had announced that two of their star players are actually going to be out for the rest of the season due to injuries. Zion Williamson with his back injury and as well as CJ McCollum with a right foot bone contusion. During this time the Pelicans had a 21-54 record, putting them at lower ranks.
Williamson during this season was doing a fantastic job overall. His performance was very noticeable by the people. He was averaging 24 points per game, 7 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in over 30 games. Having him out this season will really affect the Pelicans and their performance.
This occurring injury adds to Williamson’s well known history of health setbacks. Ever since he stopped college, and went into the NBA 2019 Draft being the first pick, his rookie season came to an early end with a torn meniscus. And in his 2021 season he suffered from a foot injury for the entire season. Zion Williamson is really a great player, but due to all of the injuries he has had in the past five years of playing professional basketball really affected him as a player overall.
The Pelicans are deciding to put their players’ health first meaning that Williamson will focus on his injury right now, rather than playing. The fans do hope that he can overcome these challenges so that he can play a good season with his fullest potential.
