It’s not a surprise to anybody in the Mayfair community that there are many criticisms from a variety of sources about our school. However, it’s rare that they’re ever given a voice, as no matter how outspoken one may be, these criticisms are usually said under one’s breath or as a throwaway comment. However, in a recent street interview, I did exactly that and asked Mayfair students about their thoughts on the school as well as what they would do if they had the opportunity to change anything about the campus.
For the most part, Mayfair students were ambivalent about whether they enjoyed going to Mayfair, as some expressed their dislike of going to school while others showed some level of content towards attending Mayfair. When asked about going to a different school, however, there were mixed answers. Some answered with closer schools such as Saint Joseph down the street; while on the other hand, others would answer with farther schools like Poly High in Riverside. However, when asked what they would change about Mayfair if they had the opportunity, there were a multitude of answers. From hiring new coaches to improving the diversity profile of the school, nothing was off the radar for Mayfair students as each student shared their opinions on what the school could potentially improve on.
Mayfair is a school with a lot of history, and while it is an almost 70-year-old campus, there always seems to be something new. From the construction and relatively recent opening of the STEAM building, to the unexpected bell schedule, our school is constantly changing. Perhaps with this interview, those who have always been rather quiet about their criticisms are inspired to speak up. Who knows, maybe the opinions from this interview will be picked up and considered, adding a potential new change to our ever-evolving school.
