TWICE’s “I GOT YOU” Single

Many who are familiar with the Kpop industry have at least heard of the most successful, spectacular girl group TWICE. TWICE is a Kpop girl group consisting of 9 members: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana. Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Tzuyu and Chaeyoung. They fall under the company JYP Entertainment and they have been recognized for their amazing works and the passion they deliver on stage. On February 2, 2024, they released their new single “I GOT YOU” which is considered one of the teasers for their upcoming album “WITH YOU-th”. This song is fully in English despite the fact they are South Korean. “I GOT YOU” is a single that unravels the theme of being there for one another.

Following this theme, there are many lyrics that resonate with it. For example, in the verse, Mina and Jeongyeon sing “When I’m walking into the darkness, I know you’ll be right there lighting up the flares when it’s starless, I will follow you to the moon.” These lyrics represent that these members are there for each other, and will support each other through their highs and lows. Subsequent to this is the pre-chorus, sung by Dahyun and Jihyo, that says “No we’ll never fall apart, even million miles apart, we were lightning from the start and it keeps me going to know that”. These lyrics represent that the bond between the members will never break, even if they are distanced. When they say “we were lightning from the start” this could mean that they instantly clicked from the beginning.

In the chorus Nayeon and Tzuyu sing “No matter what, you got me I got you, and I wouldn’t want it any other way, no drop of doubt, I know deep down that we’ll make it through, just like we always do.” In the second verse, Chaeyoung, Jihyo, and Sana sing “And you know, you turn my whole world upside down, catch me before I hit the ground, and I’d do the same for you.” These lyrics emphasize the warm-heartedness these members share with each other. Especially in the environment, where stress and pressure are common (as K-pop idols who train in vocal and dance for their songs), these members continuously encourage each other to do their best. After the verse, the pre-chorus and chorus follow behind. The song refrains the chorus which further illustrates the idea that TWICE is there to love and support one another during their journeys.

“I GOT YOU” is a unique, wonderful single that introduces to us listeners that love and support is important when it comes to relationships. Even the music video highlights the significance of a beautiful, healthy bond between all the young women. With this positive, sunny concept that TWICE presents, us ONCE fans are looking forward to their comeback.
