The Power of New Year's Resolutions

During the New Year it is tradition for people to have created their New Year's resolutions. For most people, the New Year means a new start, a clean slate. A means to start fresh and become a better version of yourself. The New Year is a great opportunity for this; however, in my opinion, we shouldn't have to wait to start bettering ourselves. It seems that if you need to wait to begin your resolution, is it that important to you? This begs the question: does the New Year have that much power over resolutions?

To get a better understanding of the true power behind New Year's resolutions I asked different people about their experiences with New Year's resolutions. I gathered information on students' 2024 resolutions to get a better insight into their progress. My first source claims their main 2024 resolution was to get out of the house more. When I asked about whether or not they achieved this resolution, they stated that for the first couple of weeks into the New Year, they were dedicated to getting out of the house more and accomplishing their resolution; however, after the first month, they simply forgot all about their resolution. This goes to show how unimportant some people's New Year's resolutions can be to them. However, my other anonymous source claims that he was dedicated to accomplishing his 2024 New Year's resolution for months on end, even claiming that he feels as if he accomplished it by summertime, near the end of the year.

With all this information, I feel like when it comes to accomplishing New Year's resolutions, it depends on how important this resolution is to the person. In some cases, I think that New Year's resolutions can wake people up and give them a reason to stop procrastinating and accomplish what they want to. However, in most cases, I believe that New Year's resolutions are just a fun thing for people to tell themselves before they forget about it a couple weeks later. The most important resolutions get worked on as soon as you can, so why wait for New Year? With all that said, this doesn't mean that accomplishing your New Year's resolution is impossible. With the right mindset and dedication, of course, it’s doable. Don’t let the statistics get in your way of trying and making a difference.
