This past Saturday, right after the Lakers took the win against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks (Mavs) stunned the entire sports world with their trade news. Lakers’ star Anthony Davis (AD) will be headed to the Mavericks in exchange for Luka Doncic, Dallas’ superstar. The trade news was released at at 9 PM and definitely appalled the sports world; an unbelievable and unexpected trade that no one could have possibly seen coming.
This trade is definitely leaving many basketball fans, mostly Lakers’ fans, with the same concern: What are the Lakers going to do without a center who can get offensive and defensive rebounds, block shots, protect the paint, and shoot the basketball well? A great deal of people believe that these aren’t the last changes they will be making; in fact, some are suspecting that LeBron James might be the next player to get traded. Even though Lebron has expressed to the media that he wants to stay in LA, could he actually finish his career with the Lakers or will he get traded like how they did AD. Whatever the Lakers decide to do, they need to come up with a possible solution to not having a center as soon as possible; especially since the trade deadline is February 6th. Without a center, finding ways to win games will be way more difficult, so the Lakers need to fix that problem.
Aside from gaining Luka Doncic, I believe that the Lakers didn’t receive a fair bargain; especially considering the fact that Luka hasn’t played a game since Christmas, due to a calf strain. This trade has left me with so many questions, but the main one being: why would the Lakers even trade one of their best players for a player who has been sidelined with a significant injury? Based on what the media is interpreting from the trade, they believe that the Lakers are looking to become a team with possible playoff content, and soon win a championship. Since Luka is fresh off a playoff run last season, even making it into the finals, the Lakers believe that he is the best player to help rebuild the franchise.
Some Mavs fans are disappointed about losing Luka; as a result, many season ticket holders are asking for refunds on their tickets. Fans are outraged at the fact that Harrison agreed on the deal with the Lakers in secret, not even informing Doncic. If we're being honest this entire trade was not fair to AD, Luka, or the fans; especially since no one knew it was coming. I believe that if they would have discussed to the media that both teams were even considering the trade; I even feel that fans could have processed the news better if they knew what was going to happen.
Since both these players are both NBA all stars, they will definitely do whatever it takes to help their team be successful. Anthony Davis will for sure be missed in LA, and each time he comes back to play against our LA teams, there is no doubt that the fans will be excited to see him again. Luka Doncic will definitely be missed by his former teammates and fans, given the fact that he has grown into a fan favorite. Many basketball fans will miss the LeBron and Anthony Davis Duo and the Kyrie Irving and Luka team chemistry.
