Thanksgiving Traditions

Thanksgiving break has just ended. However, what are some of the traditions that this special holiday holds? It's a time where family comes together and remembers what they are thankful for. According to Britannica, the holiday is celebrated both in the United States and Canada. Though the history and origins of Thanksgiving is often overlooked; basically, the history of this tradition is between the Native Americans and colonial settlers. Thanksgiving is celebrated in honor of a harvest feast between the pilgrims and Wampanoag Native Americans of Plymouth in 1621.

While it is best known for its food, Thanksgiving has many other traditions people perform during the day. One of these traditions includes breaking a wishbone. According to EF, it happens after the main feast is over. Two people take each side of the Y-shaped bone of the turkey and break it. Whoever gets the larger piece gets their wish granted as the story goes. Another tradition is watching the “Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade” or whichever sport is on, usually football. I can confirm people do this as sports always seem to be on to be celebrated as a family. A newer tradition is Friendsgiving, where you celebrate the holiday with your friends. Finally, people will toast to whatever they are thankful for.

The feast of Thanksgiving seems to be its most memorable quality. Some of the most common dishes and foods include turkey (with gravy), mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, bread rolls, stuffing, macaroni and cheese (especially if there are kids), cornbread, and casseroles of various vegetables. Some common vegetable-based dishes during Thanksgiving come from sweet potatoes, butternut squash, brussel sprouts, green beans, corn, and cranberries. The most popular desert is pie, specifically pumpkin or pecan pie. I implore the readers to remember: be thankful for what you have, have fun, and Black Friday deals come right after, so get ready for the chaos at the stores.
