“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is a great movie for fans of the series. Releasing on December 20th of 2024, it has currently grossed a whopping $385 million worldwide. Even though its origins started off a bit bumpy, with major backlash at Sonic’s uncanny original design and the Covid-19 pandemic occurring only about a month after the 1st movie’s release. However, even through these struggles, the series has striked with incredibly strong characters and plot. Ever since the tease at the end of the “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”, fans have been incredibly excited since the fan-favorite, mysterious, hard-headed Shadow the Hedgehog would be in it.
I have very little negative thoughts about the actors chosen for the movie. Only one major character was added, Shadow, who was voiced by the well known actor, Keanu Reeves. I wouldn’t think to choose him for the role, but his brooding voice fits Shadow’s character incredibly well. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles all have pretty fitting voice actors. However, the strangest acting choice by far was Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, or Eggman. It’s a very different incarnation of the character, more unhinged than previous versions and definitely influenced by Jim Carrey’s acting style. This doesn’t make the character bad, it’s actually quite entertaining if you’re one for Jim Carrey’s acting style; just hard to compare to previous tellings.
The movie itself was extremely fun. It does Shadow’s character and backstory justice. It’s also, as far as I’m aware, the most scene time the character, Gerald Robotnik, Eggman’s grandpa and scientist whom Shadow works with in the movie gets in any form of Sonic media. It’s the only time I can recall where he is physically there, instead of a character who only appears in recordings and flashbacks. There was a scene near the end where both the pacing and emotional switch was a bit fast. The scenes that followed went pretty well though. Alongside this, the movie’s end credit scenes leave me excited for whatever movies the series brings next.
Overall, I highly recommend this movie to any fan of the Sonic series. It’s hard to enjoy the movie to its full extent without watching the first two, but that’s the way with most movie sequels. I would still recommend this movie to people who aren’t fans of the games or series. Though the story contains quite a few inside jokes for big fans, the movies can still be fun for people who haven’t looked into the series. Maybe it won’t have the same hit as it would for someone who’s enjoyed the series for as long as I have, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth watching.
