Shohei Ohtani to the Los Angeles Dodgers

Updated: Jan 10

Shohei Ohtani, a Japanese MLB Superstar, was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on December 8th, 2023, from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Shohei was signed on a record-shattering deal of $700 million for 10 years. This contract is the biggest contract in American sports history, breaking the former MLB record by almost $300 million.

Shohei Ohtani is a superstar and has played on the Angels for the first 6 years of his career after coming from Japan’s baseball league. After the 2023 season, many MLB fans, experts, teams, and many others were expecting him to be traded after a rather disappointing outcome with the Angels, never making the playoffs or coming close to winning the division. Many expected the two-time MVP to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays, as it was reported a day before his trade that he was in Toronto.

Fortunately this was false, as Shohei never left California. He was signing his massive contract with the Dodgers. The lie about him being in Toronto got many fans excited, including rap superstar, Drake, who posted a picture on his story with an Ohtani jersey on. All the excitement would end for these fans though, as news broke out the next day that he would just be moving about 45 minutes north to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ohtani took to social media to announce the trade and to thank all of his former teammates, coaching staff, and other people involved in the trade for making it possible. Shohei has had an incredible career in the MLB, but the Angels were taking him nowhere. It limited him from being able to go further and expand his skill. Which likely made him want a trade.

Following this acquisition, the Dodgers will likely be serious contenders and will receive great talent with this addition to add on to their already great team.
