While it’s no surprise to anybody that Mayfair’s “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” team is one of the best high school teams in the state, two weeks ago they proceeded to make waves at the collegiate level by winning the “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 4v4 Crew Battle” at Long Beach City College.
On October 26, LBCC hosted the Grim Cup, a two-day tournament that featured brackets for “Valorant”, “Rocket League”, “League of Legends” and “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate”, which the selected lineup of Mayfair’s fighters were:
Chibuike Iwuanyanwu “Tiroga” (Junior)
Darian Heller “Mii 2.0”(Sophomore)
Josh Tirona “Sentinel” (Freshman)
Jonathan Virula “Jvee10” (Freshman)
Led by none other than Mr. Palacios, better known as the “Wiz”. The tournament was fought as a crew battle, where stocks (lives) are shared between the team (if you win with one stock left, you start the next game with only one stock, and so on). While Mayfair is a formidable team in its own right, the other schools were definitely no slackers, with teams coming from “Long Beach Poly High”, “Valley View High School” and even LBCC’s own Smash team. The event was live streamed to the "LBCC Esports" Youtube channel, so these matches are available to rewatch to their heart’s content.
To put it simply, Mayfair showed up and showed out during this entire tournament. While each school was a worthy adversary, Mayfair High School ended up on top, never losing a single game to their opponents. While every member of the team had a part to play in our success, the star of the show was definitely Tiroga. The first in Mayfair’s lineup, his King. K. Rool was there to delete stocks and take names, almost always knocking out at least 2 of the players from the opponent’s team, setting Mayfair up for a smooth and easy victory.
