For almost three years, the Mayfair Monsoon Esports platform has hosted "Super Smash Bros Ultimate" tournaments every month during the school year, and it was only last year that they switched to the “Eye of the Storm" series, which features other games such as “Guilty Gear Strive” and “Mario Kart”. While these tournaments always have a decent amount of competitors, they usually don’t reach past 50. However, this last tournament was a day to remember for the platform, as Eye of the Storm #10 reached record numbers, attracting over 80 competitors from elementary to high school and even college students.
The atmosphere roared with the sounds of cheers and gameplay as esports players for "Super Smash Bros Ultimate", “Mario Kart”, “Street Fighter 6”, and “Guilty Gear Strive” all coming from a variety of schools across southern California congregating in the STEAM building. This tournament also introduced a new bracket: a free-to-enter "Super Smash Bros Ultimate" Squad Strike open to anybody willing to compete. However, the star of the day, as always, was the All Ages "Super Smash Bros Ultimate" double elimination bracket. This bracket always attracts the best players from around the area, including former Mayfair alumni such as the determined Pac-Man player MarkR (Mark Rodriguez, class of 2023) and the crowd favorite Bowser Cheeso (Quazar Bueno-Hill, class of 2024) as well as other well known competitors such as the notorious Pac-Man GamerAce, the incredibly skilled Byleth ForeignSkies, who won the Squad Strike bracket, and Sunny Hill’s Roy Sunshine. The space filled with resounding cheers during this bracket as these players and many, many others battled it out for a shot at glory, with the winner being none other than GamerAce The space is also student-friendly, as there are Mayfair alumni that volunteer and help out during these tournaments, myself included, which helps expose them to the space and allows them to get a feel of just what goes into planning a tournament as grand as this. Here’s to the next one!
