Martin Luther King Jr. Day, celebrated every year on the third Monday in January, is a day to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy as one of the most important humans in history. Many spent their MLK Day inside because of gloomy and sad weather, while some decided they wanted to have a small get-together. I believe it’s very important that we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day because he played a huge role in equal rights for all and advocated for those who couldn’t advocate for themselves. To this day, Martin still influences and inspires people to speak up for what they believe is right. Although Martin Luther King Jr. Day is mainly honoring a historical figure, I think it’s way deeper than just that. It is also a reminder that we are still longing for social justice and racial equality.
King’s belief in unity, love, and understanding on social change left a long-lasting impact on the world and forever will. Most peaceful protests will always be rooted back to the original blueprint, King, and what he fought for, that we still to this day are fighting for. We play a big role in King’s legacy, whether it be us educating ourselves about the struggles in the past or standing up for justice in our community. You may have even seen communities going around and doing volunteer work or picking up trash to embody what King preached for.
On Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day, it is not just a day of honoring King, but also a day to reflect and look back on how far we have come and to consider what we can do to improve our society and build equality.
