Martin Luther King Day, celebrated every year on the third Monday in January, is a day to honor Martin Luther King's legacy as one of the most important humans in history. Many spent their MLK Day inside because of gloomy and sad weather, while some decided they wanted to have a small get-together. I believe it’s very important that we celebrate Martin Luther King's Day because he played a huge role in equal rights for all and advocated for those who couldn’t advocate for themselves. To this day, Martin still influences and inspires people to speak up for what they believe is right. Although Martin Luther King Day is mainly honoring a historical figure, I think it’s way deeper than just that. It is also a reminder that we are still longing for social justice and racial equality.
Martin Luther King’s belief in unity, love, and understanding on social change left a long-lasting impact on the world and forever will. Most peaceful protests will always be rooted back to the original blueprint, Martin Luther King, and what he fought for, that we still to this day are fighting for. We play a big role in Martin Luther King’s legacy, whether it be us educating ourselves about the struggles in the past or standing up for justice in our community. You may have even seen communities going around and doing volunteer work or picking up trash to embody what Martin Luther King preached for.
On Martin Luther King’s Day, it is not just a day of honoring Martin Luther King but also a day to reflect and look back on how far we have come and to consider what we can do to improve our society and build equality.
