Is TikTok Getting Banned?

Writer: Israel DiazIsrael Diaz

The famous app, “TikTok” is scheduled to be banned in the United States, on January 19th of 2025, following an agreement with the Supreme Court's decision that upholds a federal law mandating the parent company of TikTok, also known as ByteDance.  This decision foregrounds nationwide security concerns through possible data access of the users information by the Chinese government.

In addition, TikTok responded that they would, some like to say “vanish” in the United States, unless the Biden Administration decides to provide assistance against enforcing the ban, but until then, TikTok won’t be around.  This action would put a pause on the app itself. It will be removed from all app stores and any sort of web-hosting sources from offering TikTok which will prevent any updates and downloads.

In spite of the approaching deadline, ByteDance has not yet secured a buyer for its U.S. operations.  President Donald Trump who will be officially put into office on January 20th has shown a desire to solve the issue putting forward a potential suspension on the TikTok ban. In any case, without a confirmed deal or official intervention, TikTok’s shutdown appears imminent.

Moreover, the TikTok ban will have an effect on almost more than half of the U.S. population, which includes content creators and small business owners who use the platform to succeed.  TikTok pays many content creators through e-commerce and interactive videos, meaning that the ban can also have a negative effect on people’s jobs and income.  Many people have already found a different alternative to watching short term content. One app being Instagram, another one being RedNote. Overall this change emphasizes the profound effects that the ban will have on social media and digital communities throughout the United States.
