Believe it or not, there was a time when “Dragon Ball” was actually about the Dragon Balls. Long before Goku would scream his lungs off to get stronger and become a planet-busting god, he was a child traveling with his friends around the world in search of seven mystical artifacts. At its core, “Dragon Ball” is an adventure story, but as time has passed, that adventure aspect has slowly been lost. That is, until “Dragon Ball DAIMA.”
“Dragon Ball DAIMA” was set up to be an interesting addition to the “Dragon Ball” franchise long before it began airing, as it is the first “Dragon Ball” anime since “Dragon Ball Super” ending back in 2018 which is set before the events of the aforementioned series. Additionally, it saw Goku turning back into a kid, which led many to believe that this show would match the vibes of “Dragon Ball GT” from the late 90s. However, after watching the fourteen episodes that are currently out of this anime, I can confidently say that “Dragon Ball DAIMA” is more or less a modern take on the original “Dragon Ball” series from the 80s. Rather than having Goku fly around defeating threats to the Earth, he adventures through the Demon Realm alongside old allies like Supreme Kai as well as new friends in Glorio and Panzy in search of the Demon Realm Dragon Balls. Because of this downscaling of severity, the show has more time for lighthearted fun that put a smile on my face as I was watching. However, while this show isn’t your average “Dragon Ball” media, it’s still “Dragon Ball”, and is still full of absolutely gorgeous fight scenes. It’s the perfect mix of classic adventure and breathtaking action that I feel is worth checking out by fans of the franchise.
