On January 23, Bellflower Unified School District sent out an email to students, parents and guardians of the district to warn them of potential dangers.
While the second presidency of Donald Trump has been wrought with a slew of emotions, perhaps the one that is the most prominent is fear, and it’s especially true regarding Trump’s immigration policies. Ever since he entered office, one of the main issues that the president chose to tackle was the immigration crisis, which he responded to by allowing ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) to now raid areas that were once deemed off-limits such as churches, hospitals and schools. It is this last one that the district has focused on with their message, as their message shares information and resources to aid students and their families in case they ever have an encounter with ICE.
Considering how fearful people are of these new developments in immigration policies, it makes sense that the district would do this. However, there are many that could be skeptical of these new policies and may think that they have nothing to worry about. To that, I say that they aren’t very far behind. On January 28, it was discovered that ICE was spotted at a Home Depot in Cerritos less than a mile away from Bellflower High School. As of writing this, this is the closest that ICE has been, but it shows that they are not far from the area. It’s important to be vigilant and protect yourselves should one of these encounters ever occur. It’s also important to protect your fellow BUSD members in case anything of this caliber ever occurs. For now, though, we can only hope that nobody in the district will ever have to deal with an encounter like this.
